Along with the establishment of Sarajevo University in October 1949, the
Student Cultural and Art Association (KUD) "Slobodan Princip Seljo" Sarajevo was
founded, including the Folklore and Choir Section as the first forms of
students' cultural engagement in "Seljo". The intention was to enable students,
in an organizational manner, to express their talents and gifts in cultural and
artistic amateurism, through the academic approach. Over the time, "Seljo" has
grown, matured and acquired facility- Sloga. Starting from an Student's over
Academic, and later University Cultural and Art Association, it grows into the
Academic cultural center of the University in Sarajevo. The youth enthusiasm
moves "Seljo", new sections get established, some of which stop functioning,
some of which change their names. The essential influence was made by the
specific form of association in famous Sloga.
The conformism was never given way in "Seljo". The young people, and the
older too, were heading against the conventionalism, which is the feature of the
young people nature. "Seljo" developed into a unique cross-point of genuine
cultural initiatives and events. There is a testimony of this, contained in
numerous prizes, medals, awards, aplauses of the delighted spectators and
audience throughout the world, the contacts and friendships realised. "Seljo's"
results go far beyond the borders set by standard amateurism interests and
achievements.
From the very beginning this was a fertile soil for development of numerous
personnel that will be incorporated in various parts of cultural life. Many of
then started their careers and professional development in "Seljo", some stayed
and some went on. There are numerous opera artists, conductors, recognised
writers, prominent drama artists, dance and traditional dance masters,
distinguished musicians and painters, scientists and show-business artists who
started in "Seljo".
We kindly ask all that were not mentioned, in this statement of our ex and
actual members who marked the activities of "Seljo", to accept our apology . We
promise that we will correct all the omissions in our regular page updating. We
invite all former members to contact us with their proposals, suggestions and
missed names.
