Since ancient October of 1949 till present, more than 16.500 people have
been registered as the members of "Seljo". Fifty two years of truitful activities
can be divided in several periods.

Phase One - The Beginning Period
The period from October 1949 till the early sixties of the last century
can be viewed as the first phase. It was the time when the Sarajevo University
students and professors established "Seljo", with a lot of enthusiasm for
they were willing to spend their student days out of the amphitheatres,
laboratories and reading-rooms.
The beginning was modest and difficult, but the enthusiasm was enormous.
The people were willing to keep companies and their performances gained
a respectable results, therefore "Seljo" was favored by the audience in the very first decade
of its existence and had already become recognized amongst the cultural societies
throughout the BiH, ex Yugoslavia and Balkan. Soon came the first tours in
Europe and the presentation of what was born and created in "Seljo".
Phase Two - Golden Age
In history of "Seljo" this was the most productive period, which actually
covered the middle of sixties up to the end of eighties. It was a time when
the ensembles gathered many members who performed expressive and recognizable
programs. Many famous generations of "Seljo" were born then as well as
individuals who later became well known in the field of culture of this
region.
The foundation for such a success was a very well and systematically organized
material support, that was provided, through the Center of Social Activities
of Sarajevo University - CEDUS, by the University Sarajevo. This period was
marked by a number of foreign tours, numerous festival awards in choreography
achievements, theatre shows, choir performances, fine art exhibitions, vocal
groups performances, excellent music engagements...It was a time of emerging
the famous rock-scene Sloga.
Phase Three- Crisis Begins
In the beginning of nineties, social changes occurred that led to the crisis
of amateurism. It reflected in the lack of interest of the young people
and declining of the financial support of the authorized institutions, what
automatically affected the quality and therefore the performance of the existing
and production of future programs within "Seljo".
Phase Four - War and Post-war Period
In spite of war, "Seljo" adjusted its activities to the out of the common
circumstances. Some of the ensembles were active in continuity, although
with the capacity and the number of the members reduced. Some other ensembles
paused a certain period, some ceased their activities and then started again.
The life in "Seljo" was preserved, because of the enthusiasm of the few old
members and the young ones, who did not want to vegetate only. The life kept
on, lasted, regardless to the detonations, shelling, sniper shots, which followed
their arrivals to the rehearsals in Sloga, their leavings as well and their
public engagements. In these difficult times "Seljo's" cosmopolite orientation
will survive, the multi-ethnicity will be preserved through the membership
structure, associations and definition of the programs performed.
The numerous performances and public engagements were realized during the
war. The most important war project was "Sarajevsko ljeto 1994. godine" (Sarajevo
Summer 1994), shooting the short "Seljo" documentary on the occasion of
45th Anniversary, in co-production with International Student Service,
recording an audio-cassette of vocal ensemble Prijatelji.
The restoration of the individual ensembles structure and sections had begun
in 1996. In August 1997, first post-war tour in Austria was organized, succeeded
by the engagements in Germany, Turkey, Tunis...
Within the period of 1996 till the end of 2001, they had 18 foreign tours.
They performed many concerts, theatre shows, organized a number of exhibitions
... They revived the old contacts and made new one with the resembling institutions
in Europe.
In this period "Seljo" developed from University Cultural Art Association in
Academic Cultural Center of the University in Sarajevo.
A very difficult post-war situation, caused by the lack of support in co-financing
by the Sarajevo University, affected the quality of particular programs. There
is a lack of the funds for the artistic manager's fees. The restoration of
devastated facility, destroyed dressing room and costumes, music instruments
was a huge problem.
Regardless to the difficulties it was faced to, "Seljo" is slowly regaining
its recognizable position it once held in Europe. New activity forms were started-new
ensembles, festivals, that earlier had not featured this institution. The old
members, as well as the jovial youth ,who are always welcome in "Seljo" have
greatly contributed to the regaining of an old glory and reputation.
Within all these years in "Seljo", there were many ensembles that, unfortunately
ceased their activities, some that continued independently, some that are still
active, but under the different names. We will mention some of those: Grand
Blowers Orchestra, Academic Choir, Camera Orchestra, Sculptore Section, Grand
Entertaining Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, Quartet 4S, Quartet Orfej, Band
Dixieland, Indexi, Kamen na Kamen, Pro arte, Writers Club 08, Mostovi, Modern
Ballet and Dance Studio, Art Perfromances Stage.
Jakob Finci, Miroslav Homen, Minka Kamberovic, Josip Katavic, Dragan Maca Macanovic,
Davorin Popovic, Ferida Durakovic, Marko Vešovic, Mensud Meša Vatic, Nikola
Borota, Selma Koluder, Nikša Dabovic, Haris Džinovic, are some of the many
members of these ensembles and groups and the club of "Seljo"...
"Seljo's"members, with the hearts full of goodness, have always bringing joy
throughout the world.
Do not forget-the love, friendship and keeping companies have always been
nourished within "Seljo". In the Club " Kod Badze", that was opened in 1958,
from the eighties known as "Kod Muhe" and in the club Gaudeamus, or "Kod Fude" that
was opened in 1993, playing and singing late into the night. Many prominent
City artists drop by here, as well as the diplomatic core members and other
public persons.
There is no necessity to speak about cult hall/discotheque "Sloga" the concerts;
performances and parties are still held there, where the generations of young
people have been growing up.
